“The LORD [is] my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.”

Psalms 28:7

SPC Short History:

The Pentecost Movement in Sudan started in 1977; when Evangelist Benjamin L. Terah, a famous Southern Sudanese Pentecostal preacher, who was endowed with power from God and Sprit-filled,upon his return from theological studies in Kenya, started his dynamic and powerful gospel preaching in funeral places, markets and along the streets of Juba. His Spirit-filled preaching led to massive conversion of people into true Christianity and the subsequent establishment of small church congregations which comprised of the believers who got saved as a result of his open-air preaching. The new believers would gather every Sunday in Addis Primary School for Sunday Service and prayer and Bible Studyfellowship in some other days of the week. In order to focus on his evangelistic calling, Rev. Terah brought in Rev. Adi Ambrose to pastor the young church. Rev. Adi was a great Bible teacher and a Pastor. To date Ev. Terah is widely regarded as the founder of the Sudan Pentecostal Church and Rev. Adi Ambrose as the first Pastor of the Pentecostal church.

By the 1980s, the same evangelistic Pentecostal Movement also started inYei by Rev. Thomas Kenyi and in Kajo-keji by Rev. Simon Sekwat respectively.

Through continued evangelism and revival crusades, the Pentecostal Movements quickly spread to other cities, towns and villages and many churches were planted. The rapid growth of the number churches gave birth to the need to organize the newly planted churches. Hence, the first General Assembly of the Pentecostal churches was called and conducted in Kaya in 1984;which brought together representatives from Juba, Yei, Bor, Kajo-keji and other places in the then Southern Sudan. It was in this Assembly that the movement transformed itself into a denomination with the name Sudan Pentecostal Church (SPC). In this first Assembly Rev. Adi Ambrose was elected as the first Chairman of the Sudan Pentecostal Church(SPC). The Second General Assembly of the Sudan Pentecostal Church was done in 1986 in which Rev. Samuel Udu was elected to be the second Chairman of the Sudan Pentecostal Church.

The protracted civil war between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M) led to the breaking of the Church into two administrative areas; the churches which were in the government-controlled areas with its headquartered in Juba under one administration ledbyRev. James Dema and thechurches in the SPLA controlled areas and refugees’ camps led by Rev. Samuel Udu.

During Rev. James Dema’s reign as General Overseer, the Sudan Pentecostal Church expanded to Khartoum and other States in the Northern Sudan. The Sudan Theological College which was operating in Juba was transferred to Khartoum for security reasons and sustainability. Rev. James Dema was then succeeded by Rev. Fermo Ogilla who led the SPC until 2004, and Rev. Hani Khamis took over as SPC Interim Coordinator for two years until the next General Assembly which was conducted in 2006. Meanwhile in the other administrative area,

Rev Samuel Wudu led the Churches very well and was smoothly succeeded by Rev Christopher Banja who also served his two terms (1995- 2000) of leading the churches in the liberated area and the refugees’ camps successfully. In 2001, Rev Michael Taban Toro succeeded Bp Christopher Banja as General Overseer, whose part of administration was done during the detached leadership. This arrangement continued up to the time the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in 2005. Thesigning of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)created an opportunity for the merger of the two different administrative areas of the Sudan Pentecostal Church. The first General Assembly of the SPC as a unified body was conducted in 2006 in which Bishop Taban Toro was elected as the Geneal Overseer and served from 2006 to 2011. After the elapse of his two terms as General Overseer, Bishop Dr. Isaiah Majok Dau was elected as General Overseer in 2011 and reelected in 2015; served for two terms, which ended in 2021.In his leadership the Church grew to other areas of South Sudan especially in the Bahr El Ghazal Region. Bishop Dr. Isaiah Dau Majok was succeeded by the current General Overseer Bishop James Lado Emiliano who was elected during the General Assembly of April 2022. Bishop James Ladu is embarking on bringing numerous developments for spread and transformation of the Sudan Pentecostal Church.

The Sudan Pentecostal Church (SPC) has seventeen (17) Area Boards andnearly 500 self-propagating, self-governing, self-supporting Local churches and Fellowships located in all parts South Sudan, refugees’ camps in Uganda, DRC, Sudan,Egypt and beyond; which representatives constitute the General Assembly. The General Assembly is the highest body/meeting of SPC that constitutes representatives of the SPC local churches.
